Andrew A. Stewart Place-based design, Argyll
Brands built from the stories beneath them.
I'm Andrew Stewart, a brand & digital designer on the west coast of Scotland. I make brands and visual identities rooted in Argyll, shaped by its landscape, history and the people who live here.
Selected works
Brands & projects, rooted in place.
Client work from the west coast, from a drum tutor in Lochgilphead to an industrial firm working across Scotland.
Argyll Rhythm
Brand & identity · Design & Development · Print
Identity and brand design project for a drum & percussion tutor in Mid Argyll. One hand-drawn line reads as both a waveform and the hills of the glen, energetic, friendly and unmistakably local.
Music tuition, Lochgilphead
Onsite Blasting Scotland
Brand & Identity · Website · Signage
A bold, structural mark for a Scottish sandblast cleaning firm, built to stay legible at distance on vans, signage and workwear.

Brands I build for the pleasure of it.
Real places, real history, imaginary clients. Self-initiated work where I set the brief myself, and the only thing being tested is the idea.
Whaup Press
Brand & identity · Editorial · Print
An independent Scottish nature and story publication, named for the curlew. A quiet, literary identity built for a masthead, a spine and a cover that has to hold up on a shelf.

Panner’s
Brand & identity · Packaging · Heritage
A Scottish ginger beer with history behind it. Stoneware, embossed lettering and old lithographed labels, brought forward into something that still earns its place on a modern shelf.
Ginger beer · Scotland
Kilmartin Interactive Map
Worldbuilding · Map design · Interaction design
Identity and a full icon set for an interactive guide to Kilmartin Glen's standing stones and rock art. Gold on navy and celestial, themed on "as above, so below."

Things I build for myself.
Tools and products made in the studio, tested on my own work first, then folded into client projects when they earn their place.
Ambient Key
In useInterface component
The light and dark key at the top of this page. A sun, a moon and a travelling marker, with a border that lights up as you move down the page. Built once, themed per project.

In developmentProduct concept
A calendar without a grid. Time sits on a horizon, near things low and bright, far things faint and high, and the day sweeps across once. An experiment in reading a schedule at a glance.

In developmentInterface component
A before and after slider with the control moved out of the picture. A circle on a clean rail, magnetic at the quarters, horizontal or vertical, and it ticks under your thumb on a phone.

A simple, four-step way of working.
- 01
Get to know you
We talk through your business, your customers and the place you come from. No jargon, no nonsense, just us.
- 02
Find the angle
I find the one idea your brand should stand on, the thing that's true about you and your place, and worth saying out loud.
- 03
Shape the identity
I build the whole thing by hand, the marks, palette, type and the world it lives in, working until it feels rooted and right.
- 04
Set you up to run it
Files, simple guidelines and templates, so your brand keeps working long after the project's done.
About
I'm Andrew, a place-based designer on the west coast.
I'm Andrew A. Stewart, the designer behind Northmarker. I'm drawn to work with a strong sense of place, brands and projects that could only come from where they're from. I work with you directly, start to finish, from a desk above Loch Fyne in Argyll.
If you'd rather your brand sounded like you, and like where you're from, than like everyone else, we'll get on well.

What you can count on
You deal with me
One designer, start to finish. You always know who's doing the work and who to call.
Built to last
No throwaway trends. Brands designed to still look right in five years, not just at launch.
Yours, properly
Every mark starts from something true about you and your place, never borrowed from somewhere else.
Tell me about your project.
Whether it's a full brand, a thematic project or something rooted in your own part of the world, drop me a line and I'll get back to you personally.
